Tactile Z
Replace the stock Z button switch with an aftermarket option for more tactility.
The Z button is the only button that uses a mechanical switch rather than a silicone membrane, but many find the OEM switch to feel mushy or otherwise unsatisfying to press. Numerous alternative switches have been used, and in general the replacement of the switch is often called Tactile Z because the aftermarket switches tend to have more distinct actuation feedback.
Both Tactile Z switches and mouse-click switches can be described as “clicky,” but mouse-click switches tend to have a lower actuation threshold than the stock switch, whereas Tactile Z switches usually have a higher actuation threshold (i.e. require more force to press).
Parts
Any switch that can be made to fit can theoretically work, but these are some of the more common choices. Note that some switches require manual modification to fit OEM boards.
- Trigger switches from the Wii Classic Controller (sometimes called “OEM Tactile Z”) — lighter resistance
- Omron B3F-3120 — medium resistance, requires modification
- Omron B3F-3122 — heavy resistance, requires modification
- Generic switch available from Beta Buttons
Process
The general process is as simple as desoldering the stock switch and soldering in the replacement switch. For certain switches like the Omron ones, modification to the legs of the switch is necessary (see guide).
